Bringing together again the special rapport of this group of esteemed and respected chamber music colleagues and friends of the late Peter Cropper in another early evening delight.

Schubert’s sublime and much loved string quintet is a favourite of both chamber musicians and audiences alike. In this masterpiece the unforgettable and often haunting melodies contrast with the energy and vibrancy of the Viennese spirit.

Brahms’ Quintet, one of the composer’s most popular chamber works, is more generally known in the work’s later forms (as piano quintet or piano duet) but it was first written for strings with the same

instrumentation as the Schubert. This original version offers a rare and fascinating opportunity to experience the completely different and equally memorable first emanation of this luscious masterwork, and the chance to compare it with the later piano version (see Carducci I: 26 Mar) gives an extra dimension that will both heighten appreciation and make for some interesting discussion.

Introduced by the players – all established

members of various well-known chamber

groups who enjoy this opportunity to present

programmes they particularly enjoy.
