REQUIEM FOR A PINK MOON

An Elizabethan Tribute to

Nick Drake

Tickets: £16.50

25 & under: £8.00

18 & under:£1.00

A tribute to one of the greatest singer/songwriters

of the past 50 years, Nick Drake (1948-74) who

inspired musicians as diverse as R.E.M., The Cure

and The Dream Factory and has become posthumously increasingly well-known with his songs speaking directly to the human condition – just as did his famous Elizabethen forbears.

In Pink Moon Frederiksen has ‘orchestrated’ Nick’s finely crafted songs and rhythmically driving guitar with those of the earlier masters using Renaissance instruments and voice with an interleaving of Gregorian plainsong from the Requiem Mass: the sequence moving from songs such as Drake’s ‘Rider on the Wheel’ through Dowland’s ‘Time Strands Still’ to Drake’s ‘Time Has Told Me’... in a melding of new and old which both magically illuminate each other and form a stunning work in remembrance of this modern day troubadour.

Joel writes: ‘So many people are still moved by Nick’s music. I see him as a contemporary Thomas Campion, a Renaissance poet-singer-songwriter who went to Peterhouse College, Cambridge, in the late 16th century (as Nick went to Fitzwilliam in the 20th). Our goal was to connect and shed new light on the two eras through their music. The CD of the work (on Harmonia Mundi) has won numerous awards including the German Grammy.

Ensemble Phoenix, one of Europe’s most respected ‘historically informed’ groups was founded in 2003 by the American bass and lutenist: using a core of experts in the field of early music with guests such as Stephan van Dyke and Dame Emma Kirkby they focus on the Renaissance and early Baroque though their programmes range from medieval to contemporary music reflecting the interests of their talented artistic director, always with the ultimate Baroque aim to reach and move the ‘affections’ of the listeners.

“Ensemble Phoenix makes ancient music come alive.”                                                       All Music

“Frederiksen is that rare combination of both a brilliant singer and player/self accompanist whose amazing basso profundo resonates with a lustrous and magical appeal.”

Washington Post

“Elizabethan meets contemporary classical! A testament to the brilliance of Frederiksen – few true artists would have dared to take

such an incredible roll of the musical dice and wind up with results that are so stunning. A crossover album you won’t want to cross back from!”

Critical Jazz

“Every once in a while there’s a perfect confluence of concept, repertoire and performance and a kind of miracle occurs – this is just such a one. It works brilliantly and the music will haunt you.”
