Song Recital - James Gilchrist tenor, Chris Symons piano

The Gateway, Shrewsbury

One of  the UK’s most acclaimed tenors, James Gilchrist, partnered on the piano by Christopher Symons, present an evening of German and English pastoral music that will include three song-cycles – the drama of unrequited love and despair that is Schumann’s Dichterliebe, Finzi’s wonderful Til Earth Outwears and Butterworth’s setting of Housman’s A Shropshire Lad. Various glorious songs by Schubert and English composers will complete the programme. Their performance of Schubert’s Winterreise in the 2012/13 was a highlight of the season.

James Gilchrist is one of the UK’s leading and most acclaimed tenors. He appears on the national and international concert platforms with most of the great orchestras and conductors, and is also renowned for his many operatic roles, recitals and a hugely-praised recording output. His singing is remarkable for its deeply expressive and lyrical beauty, and for the sensitivity of his musical interpretation. James’ international appearances this Season include Germany, Holland, Spain, Canada and Australia, as well as at many festivals in the UK, the Wigmore, BBC Radio 3 etc.

Christopher Symons is well-known in the region for his many musical involvements, including collaborations with John Lill, Martin Roscoe, Tasmin Little, Laurence Jackson, Guy Johnston, the Skampa and Allegri Quartets, the European Union Chamber Orchestra and Manchester Camerata. For many years he was the Director of the prestigious Oswestry School Recital Series and in June, he will join the Gildas String Quartet in Elgar’s Piano Quintet, as part of that Series.
