WASTEPAPER OPERA CO.

We follow the enthusiastic reception to last season’s Pop-Up Opera’s ‘Barber of Seville’ with another delight.

Founded in 2012 by critically-acclaimed composer James Oldham, Waste Paper Opera Company is a young interdisciplinary collective of artists creating innovative, cross-genre music theatre that drives artistic innovation and brings it to the most diverse

audience possible, challenging preconceptions of what opera is and can be.

The Coffee Opera is about consumerism, capitalism, the coffee scene, snobbery and contrast. It takes the clichés of opera and the clichés of an artisan barista and stand them off face to face to expose the parallel in the elitism of both coffee and opera. JS Bach, himself a coffee enthusiast wrote his rare example of a secular work for an ensemble based in Zimmerman’s coffee house in Leipzig – a tale about the young vivacious Aria (here called Lizzie) who loves coffee but whose killjoy father is, of course,

dead set against his daughter having any kind of caffeinated fun…

The audience become the customers in the coffee shop and the baroque narrator becomes the Barista host, transforming a baroque opera into a modern day ‘coffee shop’, in a production that skips cheerfully

between the 1730’s and the quest for a perfect coffee in our own age.
