Haydn Quartet – Op54 No.1, Suk Quartet – Op11, Janáček Quartet – No.2 (Intimate Letters)
6.45 pm – Meet the Czechs
Widely acknowleged as ‘one of the best quartets in the world today’, since winning the London International String Quartet Competition in 1991 they have developed an impressive international career, including regular visits to major festivals in Europe and the Far East.
With an outstanding reputation for the interpretation of its native Czech heritage, and of the many classical, romantic and modern masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire, they here champion works from their home country alongside one of the ‘father of the string quartet’ Haydn’s virtuoso Op54 that comes to a comically stuttering finale.
The Quartet’s discs have received many accolades including ‘Recording of the Year’ by MusicWeb, ‘The best recorded performance I’ve encountered’ in BBC Music Magazine, and ‘Outstanding’ by International Record Review.
“Assured performances and fiercely committed playing ..virtuosic, eminently stylish, and exceptionally sensitive” - The Sunday Times
“Not many modern quartets capture the sense of veiled but intense melancholy as well as a sweeping intensity” - BBC Music Magazine
