Monks of Tibet

Sacred Music and Dance from the Land of the Snow

The monks introduce the unique costumes worn in the dances and invite participants to learn a few of the steps. Traditional Tibetan refreshment.

With rich overtone chanting, traditional costumes, ceremonial masks and Tantric instruments including conch-shell trumpets, meditation bells and the powerfully low sounds of the majestic dungchen (long horns), the Monks evoke the atmosphere of sacred Tibet, giving an insight into one of the most unique, spiritual and traditional cultures in the world.

The performance will include sacred dances such as Durdak Garcham (Dance of the Skeleton Lords); Daksin Tsarchod, a haunting melody from the eleventh century female mystic, Ma-chik Lab-don; a demonstration and explanation of Taksel, the art of debate, and auspicious songs and prayers for world peace.

Under the patronage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Drepung Monastery was founded in 1416 and is known for the high standards of its academic and spiritual study.

Experience a Sand Mandala – Mon 28th-Wed 30th October, 10am-4pm, Unitarian Church, Shrewsbury

An ancient art form of Tibetan Buddhism in which the sacred mandala is carefully constructed from dyed sand particles. It is believed to be a form of individual and environmental transformation contributing to the healing and harmony of the local area and its inhabitants. Some fun activities for children of all ages will be available throughout illustrating Tibetan and Buddhist traditions.

Opening ceremony: 10am, Mon 28th Oct – the monks chant powerful prayers for peace, prosperity and healing in traditional overtones, accompanied by delicate hand gestures, cymbals, drums and horns.

Closing Ceremony: 4pm, Wed 30th Oct – the completed mandala is swept up and following a procession to the River Severn is dispersed into the water and the world.
